Your Makeup Routine

The first and most important thing about applying makeup is learning to be comfortable and healthy about applying makeup. This means that you need to have an area where all your makeup items are stored and all your brushes are stored and an area where you can sit down and apply your makeup comfortably using a mirror.

  • Many women who have been using makeup for years feel perfectly comfortable applying it all while standing in front of their sink using the medicine cabinet mirror, but if you're new to eye pencils or eyelash curlers and don't relish the thought of poking yourself in the eye all the time until you improve, it's best to be seated and comfortable. If you happen to have a vanity, that's perfect. If not, no worries. The best gift you can give yourself is a small freestanding mirror that you can position how you want, where you want. These can be purchased relatively cheaply for $10-$15 at Target or Ulta or any similar store, and they're a very useful item to have.

  • After being comfortable, cleanliness is extremely important. Using makeup is all fun and good, but if you have acne or are prone to it, poor makeup hygiene can cause some pretty serious breakouts. Whatever area you use to apply your makeup, whether it be a vanity, your desk, or the kitchen table, the surface should be clean and you should be free to move.

  • You should also always keep your supplies clean and neat. Brushes should be washed about once a week for a regular makeup user, and I will make a post at a later date detailing how and when to do this.

  • Before you ever apply any makeup, you should absolutely always wash your face. It doesn't have to be anything serious; a quick wash with a wet washcloth will do. You just need to get the surface oils and dirt off your face. If you apply makeup over dirt, you will be trapping it in and this may cause a breakout. Also, makeup and moisturizers just plain take better on a clean face.

  • Lastly, you should always, always, always remove your makeup when the day is done. Makeup that stays on your face while you sleep can clog your pores or dry out your skin, plus it's not too nice to your pillowcase.
I will post some photos of my own setup (and perhaps my roommate's) at a later time, when I have a working camera again.
